Ruedi Lüthy Foundation – Hope and prospects for people with HIV in Zimbabwe
For over 20 years, the Ruedi Lüthy Foundation has been working to improve the future of people living with HIV in Zimbabwe. It runs one of the country’s leading HIV clinics, the Newlands Clinic in Harare. Over 8,000 patients receive free medical care, psychological support and access to essential medication there. Almost all of them live in poverty. Thanks to the comprehensive care provided by the foundation, they can receive consistent treatment and regain hope.
In addition to treatment, education is key: around 1,000 medical professionals from across the country are trained each year. In this way, the Ruedi Lüthy Foundation is helping to improve HIV care throughout Zimbabwe in the long term.
Exabio is one example of how this aid is making a difference. After being laid off as a truck driver, the 64-year-old lived in poverty for a long time. Thanks to the Newlands Clinic’s Mens Economic Empowerment Programme, he was able to set up a small chicken farm. Today, he sells his animals at a profit, has built his own well and can once again provide for his family. Exabio’s story shows how medical aid, education and targeted support work together – and change lives.
